Parents are a child's primary life teacher and their advocate.

Over the years people have asked me why Parents, Teachers and Advocates, Inc? My answer has always been because parents are teachers and advocates for their children.  Parenting first and foremost is to help children grow and learn so that they can become who they were born to be.  The most important part of that is education.  I tend to have a beef with the educational system.  First, they call parents the first teachers and then make it hard for parents to participate in the educational system.

Here at PT&A we believe that parents are the key to a solid education especially when they know key things.  The first is many people think that education takes place in the classroom.  Not so!! Education takes place when kids do their homework and are able to do wuthout assistance what the teacher presented in class.  This is the primary reason I believe home schoolers do so well.  They not only have one-on-one attention; they get plenty of time to practice what they have learned.

Education and Advocacy

One of the most important parts of being a parent is understanding how essential it is for you to be committed to your child's education.  Today's busy schedules and hectic lifestyles can cause many parents to put their children's education into the hands of the educational system. PT&A wants you to understand that this is a mistake and why. Please see the article on why parents are the most important and missing segment of education.

Home Schooling

Many families are asking themselves if Homeschooling is the best way for parents to be truly involved in education. Each family must decide for themselves what is best for them.  However, the studies are showing that children who homeschool actually do better on standardized tests and are more able to learn independently. In addition, children are able to study what interests them for longer and more detailed learning experiences. The Home School Legal Defense Association is dedicated to helping parents get started and to defend their right to school their children at home.  If you would like more information please click on the link below.

TUDA and The Nations Report Card

TUDA is an acronym for Trial Urban District Assessment.  The goal of the assessment is to help urban school districts catch up with the rest of the American school system. Started in 2000 when the coalition of city schools know as the Council of Great City Schools approached the National Assessment of Educational Progress to help urban schools to help them to assess their reading and math programs.  It started in 2002 with five districts and the District of Columbia.  In 2009 ut has grown into 18 urban districts who now participate in this voluntary independent assessment. The National Report Card shows that although still behind urban districts are making the changes needed to help children make significant strides in non-urban districts.  Our own Atlanta schools have improved the scores of both fourth and eighth grade students by 14%.  To see more about the nations report card see below.
